Jacopo Prina
Biography
Jacopo Prina, Milan 1971.
He was born into a family where his uncles, parents and friends all work in design, graphics, art or publishing.
He walks down the corridor of his house countless times. For two decades. It is dotted with abstract, minimal, conceptual, indecipherable art from the 1960s and 1970s.
In 1990, with a specialisation in industrial design, he left the house with the long corridor ready to enter Milan, where he produced and studied ceramics for several years. In Milan, in Tuscany, in Spain and by renowned masters in Veneto.
He seeks in the plasticity of this ancient material the freedom to expand in every direction without constraints.
As a professional, he ran a ceramics workshop in San Sebastian for six years.
In 2000, he left all the practical complications of being a ceramist to express himself on two-dimensional surfaces through painting.
He reproduced, juxtaposing them, the ordinary, everyday textures that surrounded him. Taken as samples, as evidence of our habitat, as indications of an orderly, standard and repetitive way of behaving.
He observes and photographs individual inhabitants in different capitals of the world forced into urban geometries. He reproposes them within rigid two-dimensional paths. He then considers the whole through the sculpture 'Massa' exhibited at the Arnaldo Pomodoro Foundation in Milan in 2008.
He observes the infinite city, from above, from further away, in the 'Maps' series, from a Google satellite.
He paints maps in search of a utopian orientation, they are dreamlike visions of vast territories without a centre.
He throws, tramples, tears up auction catalogues. (Secret Papers series).
He exercises an explicit critique of the market and the art system. He crumples art icons encompassed, ouch, by the market and financial speculation. An iconoclastic struggle for the supremacy of the language of art over commercial value.
His exhibition career began with two solo shows in 2005. In Milan at Luciano Inga-Pin and at Zvono Gallery in Belgrade. These were followed by numerous other solo and group exhibitions in Italy and abroad.
