An ancient Indian legend tells of an elephant that one day arrived in a remote village. The wise, blind members of the community approached it to understand what it was, and each of them, touching a different part of the pachyderm, obtained a different description: those who touched the trunk believed it to be a snake, those who touched the tusk thought it was a spear, those who touched the legs believed they were in front of a temple. No one could correctly say what it was, even though the animal was right in front of them.
